2008 NAPR/NALTO Annual Convention

Excerpts taken from the article written by Barbara and Jim Twardowski. Reprinted from the July 2007 issue of LocumLife magazine.

Tucked into the southwest corner of Tennessee, Memphis is perched on the Chickasaw Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. The largest city in the state, it is known as the "Home of the Blues" and the "Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll."

Memphis is all about the music. Such musical legends as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Otis Redding, Jerry Lee Lewis, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, and others began a musical revolution here that changed the world. For an entertaining and educational journey through five decades of musical history, visit the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum. This compelling Smithsonian Institution exhibition features an MP3 audio guide that allows guests to tour at their own pace while listening to more than 100 songs recorded in and around Memphis. Next, step inside the famed Sun Studio where 18-year-old Elvis Presley recorded his first song, "That's All Right."

The 14-acre Graceland Mansion is located on Elvis Presley Boulevard. Only the White House receives more visitors each year than the undisputed king of Rock 'n' Roll's home. To round out your tour, visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in the neighborhood known as Soulsville USA. Once a small record shop, it pays tribute to top recording artists of the past and present.

Beale Street: From the late 1880s into the 20th century, Beale Street became a cultural center for the African American community. Set in the heart of the city, this lively district was home to nightclubs, gaming parlors, and the Blues. When workers came to town after toiling in dusty cotton fields, they brought with them the chanting songs called "field hollers." Bandleader, William Christopher (W.C.) Handy was the first to transcribe and arrange these songs.

A Bustling Downtown: Downtown Memphis is on the move with more than $3 billion in development. An expanded trolley line makes sightseeing a breeze, taking commuters around downtown for just 30 cents a ride. While in town, take a tour of the Gibson Guitar Factory or learn why cotton was king at the recently opened Cotton Museum.

Delectable Eateries: On the weekends, Charlie Vergos' Rendezvous Ribs is packed with locals and tourists alike. Here, the menu is short and the lines are long because the restaurant's specialty -- ribs prepared with a dry rub seasoning and grilled in a charcoal pit -- is the most famous barbeque in Memphis. If you are looking for a leisurely dinner, head for the historic Peabody Hotel and the NAPR Convention Headquarters Hotel. Arrive early and you can watch the hotel's famous ducks swimming in the fountain. Afterwards, stop by the Capriccio Grill, an Italian Steakhouse serving top quality U.S. prime steaks and chops as well as a fine fresh lobster and seafood selection. Rounding out the menu are delicious pasta dishes, and be sure to save room for some tempting sweets like hot Godiva chocolate cake.

Vendor Profile: PhysicianWork.com

PhysicianWork is the largest physician job site on the internet with over 63,000 jobs online nationwide. Recruiters pay to use PhysicianWork but it is completely free for job seekers. This website will enter its 8th year online this December and has been rated consistently in surveys over the last four years (by physician recruiters) as the most effective physician recruiting tool available online.

On PhysicianWork, direct employers (hospitals, health systems, medical practices) and recruiting/staffing firms (both permanent and locum tenens) are able to post jobs for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and CRNAs, and search CVs online for these specialties. Additionally, recruiting/staffing firms are able to market candidates to employers and locate new clients who are able to work with recruiting firms. PhysicianWork is a high-profile, well-respected resource. This fact, combined with aggressive candidate marketing, has made PhysicianWork one of the most successful physician recruiting resources ever developed. To date, almost 73,000 candidates have registered on PhysicianWork. Additionally, the website isn’t loaded with “lists” of physicians. The candidates who have registered on PhysicianWork are professionals who have voluntarily signed up on our site as “job seekers” to locate new employment opportunities. This makes us quite different than “list services” who provide name/phone/address information on physicians who are not seeking employment. Our candidates are active job seekers for both permanent or locum tenens positions.

Mr. Jeff Sisk is the sole owner and President/CEO of StaffMD, Inc., which owns a number of nationally known and highly respected recruiting websites. StaffMD owns the medical job sites PhysicianWork.com, DoctorWork.com, LocumTenensWork.com, RxWork.com (pharmacists) and RnWork.com (nurses). His past experience includes permanent and locum tenens physician recruitment in the 1990’s with Medical Doctor Associates and Encore Medical Staffing. Prior to recruiting, he had extensive experience in the production and marketing of shows and media events and he was chief engineer for the Atlanta-based recording studio, Hollyberry Music. Some of his projects involved show production for World Cup Soccer, Lucent Technologies, the UniverSoul Circus and the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Mr. Sisk’s unique blend of “hands-on” experience in marketing, media, technology and physician recruitment have been instrumental in the success of StaffMD as a leader in internet-based medical recruiting tools. He was personally involved in all phases of development of StaffMD’s websites including concept, design, website programming, marketing, accounting and customer support. Mr. Sisk resides in Homosassa, FL, the base of operations for StaffMD.

Ask Miss Deed...

Dear Miss Deed:

I am the wife of a doctor who is looking for another practice. For the most part, the recruiting firms which contacted us have had reasonable information about the practices and they have called at reasonable times of the day and evening. One firm, however, was quite annoying. The recruiter called several times, wouldn’t give me any information to pass along to my husband and failed to give me a phone number so my husband could call at his convenience, claiming the matter was “urgent.”

I am upset by this and wanted to bring it to your attention so you can appropriately discipline them. I don’t want to be involved any further and my husband is concerned about reprisals from this firm. Can you take care of this for us? We are...

Done

Dear Done:

The NAPR takes very seriously any and all allegations made against any of our members, but can not go further unless we have your witness statements to corroborate the facts. Since you and your husband choose not to support your complaint, I am without any substantive documentation with which to confront this organization.

I can call them and ask that they mend their ways, but without your or your husband’s testimony, my words to them are baseless. Without your involvement, this firm is left to continue their unsavory ways.

On occasion, the NAPR can bring an Ethics Case against a member based upon provable facts. Here your word represents the provable facts. So without you, we must regrettably drop any pursuit.

By the way, if an NAPR member is aware of an Ethics violation such as what you described and they do not report it or fail to follow-up, they themselves are in violation of the Code of Ethics.

Perhaps you will review your decision?

Cordially,
Miss Deed
