2005 Annual Convention – Awards & New Leadership

New Orleans was the place to be April 6 – 9, 2005, for the 21st Annual NAPR Convention. Attendees got a great taste of New Orleans food, recreation, and overall hospitality while enjoying their educational experience and stay at the Wyndham New Orleans Hotel. There were many exciting learning opportunities, fun social and networking activities, and NAPR business that was planned for all attendees.

SANDI BREWER TAKES OVER AS NAPR PRESIDENT
Sandi Brewer was installed as President of the National Association of Physician Recruiters during ceremonies on Thursday, April 7, 2005. Brewer has served on the NAPR Board for the past several years. She also chaired the 2005 Annual Convention in New Orleans and has served on several NAPR committees. Most recently, Brewer served as NAPR President-Elect as well as NAPR Vice President. Brewer assumed her duties immediately following the NAPR 21st Annual Business meeting.

ZELLER ELECTED PRESIDENT-ELECT
Members of the newly-elected NAPR Board of Directors at their initial meeting on Thursday, April 7, elected Karen Zeller as NAPR President-Elect. In addition to serving on the Board for the past several years, Zeller has served as President in 2003 – 2004. She also served on several NAPR committees, including the Ethics Committee, Convention Committee, and the special Task Force on Member Services. Zeller assumed her duties immediately following the NAPR board meeting on April 7, 2005.

OTHER OFFICERS ELECTED
Other officers elected by the Board were Jo-Ann Toldt, as NAPR Vice-President. Jo-Ann has served on the Board for several years. She has also served as chair of numerous committees including Chair of the Membership Committee for the past several years and most recently served as Secretary/Treasurer. Marty Osinski was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Mr. Osinski has served on the Board of Directors for several years.

BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED FOR THREE-YEAR TERMS BEGINNING APRIL 2005
At the Annual Business meeting on Thursday morning, April 7, the new Board members elected by the membership through written election ballot process were introduced to the membership. Those elected were Neal Fenster (reelected for a second three-year term), Tammy Jamison, and Michael Levison.

AWARDS PRESENTED
Distinguished Service Award:
Karen Zeller was presented the NAPR Distinguished Service Award, the highest award given by NAPR, for her devotion to and leadership of NAPR. This inherent trait that we share – the drive to strive for perfection – is one of the main reasons our Association continues to prosper. The recipient of the Distinguished Service Award personifies the traits just described. Karen is committed to NAPR. She has been committed to NAPR since the mid-1990s. She is honest, reliable, and totally dedicated to the art and science of physician recruiting. She has served on many committees in the NAPR, and led us as President in 2003-2004. Her most recent contribution to NAPR is spearheading the Special Task Force on Member Services this past year. She has given her time, her expertise, and her business secrets as her contributions to our organization.

President’s Award:
Julie Sherriff was presented the President’s Award for unselfishly giving of her time, knowledge and creativity to support NAPR. Julie was always first to volunteer for a new project, was unafraid to explore uncharted territory, followed through on promises made, and, most importantly, had the courage to speak her mind at the Board table, whether we wanted to hear her opinion or not. Further, in serving as President of NAPR Services which offers our co-op mailings, one of the most important programs we have, she has been able to keep the Co-op program on target, on budget and on top of the list of valuable membership benefits. This was no small task.

Vendor Appreciation Award:
The NAPR Board of Directors voted to present the 2005 Vendor Appreciation Award to the New England Journal of Medicine. NEJM has supported NAPR year in and year out through sponsorships, exhibits at the Annual Convention and Fall Fly-In as well as by advertising in several NAPR publications. The award was accepted by Jennifer Cognetta, NEJM, at the Exhibitor Lunch on Friday, April 8, 2005.

Outstanding Committee Chair Award
The recipient of this award has worked hard these past several years on the development and enhancement of NAPR’s relationship with our Vendor members. This person has devoted untold hours to improving communications with our Exhibitor friends, and she just keeps on going and going. Vendors Services Committee Chair Joan Pearson received the Outstanding Committee Chair of the Year Award.

NAPR WORLD JOB BANK (Website: www.napr.org)
The NAPR World Job Bank was discussed and promoted several times during the 2005 Annual Convention. The World Job Bank is enjoying a great deal of success. More than 9,600 physicians have registered and more than 15,000 searches have been posted on the NAPR Job Bank. Member organizations are reporting a growing number of placements that are a direct result of participation in the Job Bank.

The NAPR World Job Bank is one of the best member values available. Member organizations have access to the Job Bank 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with the ability to enter and/or delete jobs as well as view many CVs of the physicians registering for the Job Bank.

Ask Miss Deed

Dear Miss Deed:

My friend (in another firm) and I had a great idea. He had several candidates which he had interviewed, but had no readily available clients to which he could refer them. Since I belong to a split network, we agreed I would place the candidate’s CVs on the network and wait for some action. Doing it this way gives the candidate more exposure which hopefully leads to getting them jobs sooner. Since it is in the candidates’ best interests, I decided I wouldn’t tell any of the candidates until I had some “nibbles” then I would just tell the doctors about the job and refer them if they were interested.

My friend said I have to get permission from the candidate before enrolling them in the split network. I think he’s wrong because all that matters is that I tell the candidate about the job and get appropriate permission before referring the candidate to the other recruiter.

I am confident I am the…

Winner

Dear Winner (Loser):

At least you got part of it right. You are correct about getting the candidates’ permission prior to referring them to a client, but you missed the boat on placing the doctor in a split network. The Code of Ethics calls for obtaining permission from the doctor before enrolling them in a “formal or informal split-fee network.”

Hope you didn’t bet the family jewels on this one because it was a losing bet.

Cordially yours,

Miss Deed

We offer classified advertising in our news magazine, three scientific journals, and on our web site. Recruiters can advertise in our publications and on our web site and reach the largest audience of endocrinologists in the medical community.
